Dr. Michel's Bio

Why See a Urologist to Optimize your Sexual Performance?

In the old days, we urologists could only offer our patients who were struggling with erectile dysfunction a handful of medications to improve the circulation in to their penis. While these medications can be an important component of optimal sexual performance, I knew that our team at Comprehensive Urology could do better. Why just try one treatment when we could develop a comprehensive program that could truly transform the intimate lives of our male patients?

I began combining erectile dysfunction medications with shockwave therapy for ED treatments and found that the combined therapies amplified the results. My patients came back to tell me that they were having harder, more frequent erections and that their sex life had found a new bloom. Their partners were also happy with the results.

I then combined ED medications and shockwave therapy with vacuum erectile devices and discovered that not only were my patients having more satisfying erections, but also that the combined therapies were resulting in penis elongation and greater penile girth. This happens because the ED medications relax the veins to increase blood flow while the shockwave therapy stimulates growth of new blood vessels. These fantastic results motivated me to go further with our customize male enhancement treatment plans.

The next step in male enhancement came in the form of PRP penile injections. Platelet Rich Plasma injections (PRP) injections have been found to stimulate deep repair of penile blood vessels especially in people with Peyronie’s Disease (bent penis) which can happen after a trauma to the penis. We take a small sample of the patient’s blood, run it through the centrifuge to isolate the restorative platelets,  and then inject the PRP into the penis to stimulate growth.

I’ve also used Penile Botox injections in a similar way and found that they significantly increases the girth of the penis while also increasing the frequency of erections.  Botox injections can also be used to smooth the wrinkles of the scrotum and prevent sweating in a procedure called Scrotox. Over the years, my philosophy about male enhancement has evolved. Sexual health isn’t just about restoring erectile dysfunction and low libido, rather it’s about optimizing the full potential of your body to reach a new peak sexual performance. Our bodies just need help to get to that peak level using the proven, customized treatment plans that I’ve developed over the past 20+ years. Give yourself the gift of renewed vitality and unlock your full sexual potential.

Common Penile Problems

The most common penile problems that we see all contribute to a decrease in sexual performance and enjoyment. Often, patients have more than one condition at the same time, so carefully uncovering the root causes of the sexual misfunction is essential to developing a complete solution. Let’s take a look at the most common problems that can be address with male enhancement treatments at our practice.

What is Micro Penile Syndrome (Micropenis)?

Micro Penile Syndrome refers to a condition in which a male’s penis size is significantly below the average for their age or stage of development. In adults, a micropenis is generally considered to be less than 2.75 inches (7 centimeters) in length when measured from the pubic bone to the tip of the penis while flaccid and stretched.

This condition can occur from birth or develop later in life due to hormonal imbalances. The cause may be genetic or related to prenatal factors, such as exposure to certain drugs or hormones. While a micropenis can function normally for urination and sexual activity, some individuals may seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or psychological well-being.

What is Peyronie's Disease?

Peyronie’s disease is a condition characterized by the formation of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, causing it to develop a curve or bend during erection. The disease can make erections painful and may lead to difficulties with sexual intercourse due to the altered shape of the penis.

The scar tissue in Peyronie’s disease can also cause a decrease in penis size. The fibrous plaques can lead to shrinkage or shortening of the penis because they prevent normal expansion and stretching of the penis during an erection.

Moreover, Peyronie’s disease can contribute to erectile dysfunction (ED). The pain caused by the disease can make it difficult to maintain an erection. Additionally, the fibrous scar tissue can impede proper blood flow within the penis, which is crucial for achieving and maintaining an erection.

Lastly, the psychological stress and anxiety related to the condition can also contribute to ED. Therefore, Peyronie’s disease can both physically and psychologically contribute to erectile dysfunction.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED), or impotence, is a medical condition in which a man struggles to achieve or sustain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. This can result from psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression, or physical conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or neurological disorders. It can also stem from certain medications or lifestyle choices like excessive alcohol consumption or smoking.

ED can impact a person’s emotional well-being, often leading to stress, relationship strain, or low self-confidence. Shockwave Therapy for ED is a great non-invasive treatment option for men who suffer from ED, with fewer side effects than medication.

Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is a common sexual issue where a man ejaculates sooner than he or his partner would like during sexual intercourse. It’s characterized by a lack of control over ejaculation that causes distress and frustration. The condition can occur in all sexual situations, including during masturbation, or it might only happen during sexual encounters with a partner.

The exact cause of premature ejaculation isn’t known but it’s thought to be a complex issue with both psychological and biological factors contributing. Treatments often involve a combination of behavioral techniques, therapy, and in some cases medication. Dr. Kia Michel and his team at Comprehensive Urology offer simple, yet effective solutions.

What are Pearly Penile Papules?

One common condition that can significantly impact our patients is pearly penile papules. Pearly Penile Papules are small, benign (non-cancerous), dome-shaped bumps that can appear on the ridge of the glans (head) of the penis. They typically are flesh-colored or slightly lighter and appear in one or several rows around the circumference of the penis. Despite their name, they’re not always pearly or white.

PPP are completely normal and are not associated with sexual activity or hygiene. They also don’t pose any risk of sexually transmitted infections. Though generally harmless to physical health, they can still have a strong influence on your daily life, including self-consciousness or embarrassment. Comprehensive Urology is proud to provide effective pearly penile papules removal in Los Angeles.

What's an Average Penis Size?

Studies have shown that the average flaccid (non-erect) penis is 3.61 inches (9.16 cm) in length, with the average erect penis being 5.16 inches (13.12 cm) long. The corresponding girth measurements are 3.66 inches (9.31 cm) for a flaccid penis and 4.59 inches (11.66 cm) for an erect one.

A 6.3-inch (16-cm) erect penis falls into the 95th percentile: Only 5 out of 100 men will have a penis larger than 6.3 inches long. Conversely, an erect penis measuring 10 cm (3.94 inches) falls into the 5th percentile, so only five out of 100 men would have a penis smaller than 10 cm.

If you happen to have a penis length that is 6.5 inches or longer, be sure to thank your ancestors. You may not need penile elongation surgery; however, you may still benefit from non-invasive Pulsewave Therapy to increase the frequency, duration, and hardness of your erections.

In the end, penis size is subjective, and satisfying sexual intercourse is determined by the intimate partners involved. However, there is nothing wrong with asking for help, as many couples have found renewed passion following some well implemented interventions that increased confidence and intimacy.

How to Increase Penis Size Without Surgery

For most of our gentlemen looking to optimize their sexual performance, there are many non-surgical and minimally invasive solutions to increase penis size. At Comprehensive Urology, we believe in offering as many non-invasive treatments as possible, only resorting to more in-depth procedures when absolutely necessary.

Non-Surgical Male Enhancement Options

The non-surgical treatments we offer provide safe, yet effective results for male enhancement. Additionally, they can provide benefits for patients with erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation. At Comprehensive Urology, we offer several treatment options, including:

  • Low-intensity Shockwave Therapy (LISWT): This treatment uses low-frequency sound waves to achieve several beneficial outcomes. It simultaneously:

    • Increases blood flow to the penis

    • Strengthens erections

    • And improves sexual performance

LISWT (sometimes referred to as GAINSWave) is a scientifically proven and non-invasive male enhancement treatment—that means no incisions, no scarring, and increased safety. This treatment has also been shown to treat erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease (curvature of the penis). Each treatment requires about 30 minutes to complete, so it barely takes any time out of your day. After treatment, you can return to your daily routine right away, with no downtime. Following a full treatment program often helps patients achieve long-lasting results.

  • Penis Pumps, also known as Penile Vacuum Pumps, are another popular non-surgical treatment that can be effective. The treatment consists of a pump with a band attached to it. A penile vacuum pump uses vacuum technology to help men get and maintain an erection. Recent research indicates between 50% and 80% of men who use penile vacuum pumps are satisfied with their treatment results.

Other Penis Enhancement Options

There is no shortage of companies or products claiming to provide penis enhancement. Unfortunately, many of these not only are a waste of money but can even prove dangerous. By visiting a trained specialist, you can learn what penis enlargement options are possible for you and which to avoid! Below are some of the common ways people try to achieve penis enlargement. However, read thoroughly to understand which options are safe and which are not.

  • Exercises: Penis enhancement exercises often stimulate blood flow to the penis and help increase penis size and girth. While the results are not extreme, this can be a safe way to improve both function and size. Jelqing is one of the most common penis enhancement exercises. It consists of rapid pulling of the penis to increase its length. However, be sure to speak to a specialist before attempting this exercise! Additionally, penis enhancement exercise programs may be used that are tailored to a patient.

  • Stretching: Stretching with weights has been shown to promote penis enlargement. However, this exercise also puts an individual at risk of burst blood vessels and tearing penile tissue. The risks often outweigh the rewards when done without expert input or guidance.

What Male Enhancement Treatment Is Right for Me?

There is no one-size-fits-all natural male enhancement treatment that works well for all patients. Instead, it is important for a patient to meet with a urologist to receive a full evaluation. Following a patient evaluation, a urologist can provide a patient with male enhancement treatment recommendations. Plus, they can respond to a patient’s treatment questions and help this individual make the best possible treatment decision.

Are penis enlargement pills safe?

Various pills and supplements promote male enhancement. Yet these products sometimes fail to help individuals achieve their desired results. Many of them have absolutely no effect, and some can even prove dangerous. You’ve likely seen some of these lining the shelves of gas stations or other unexpected areas. Speak with a specialist before purchasing any pills or supplements that claim to have any benefits (spoiler: many do not).

Surgery for Penile Enlargement

For those who have exhausted the non-invasive methods, penile augmentation surgery offers hope to increase the length and or girth of the penis.

What are the Risks of Penile Enlargement Surgery

Penile enlargement surgery, like any surgical procedure, comes with several potential risks. These can include:

  • Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there’s a risk of infection, which could require additional treatment or even additional surgery in severe cases.

  • Scarring: Scarring can occur at the surgical site, which can impact the cosmetic outcome of the procedure and potentially cause discomfort or alter sensation.

  • Bleeding and Hematoma: There’s a risk of bleeding during or after the procedure. Hematoma, which is a collection of blood outside of the blood vessels, can also occur.

  • Nerve damage: There’s a risk of damaging nerves during surgery, which could lead to reduced sensitivity or even numbness in the penis.

  • Unsatisfactory Results: Despite the surgery, some men may still not be satisfied with the size of their penis or the aesthetic outcome. There is also the risk of asymmetry or unevenness.

  • Sexual Dysfunction: In some cases, the surgery could lead to erectile dysfunction or difficulty with ejaculation. This can happen if the surgery causes damage to the structures of the penis involved in getting or maintaining an erection or ejaculation.

  • Psychological Distress: Even if the physical outcomes are as expected, some men may experience psychological distress or have difficulty adjusting post-surgery.

As with any surgical procedure, the specific risks can vary based on individual health factors and the specifics of the procedure. It’s crucial to have a detailed conversation with the surgeon before deciding to undergo any form of surgery.

Types of Penile Augmentation Procedures

Two penis enhancement surgeries are available: lengthening and widening the penis. During a lengthening procedure, a surgeon cuts the ligament that links the penis to the pelvic bone. Doing this allows more of the penis shaft to become visible outside the body. Comparatively, during a widening procedure, a surgeon implants fat, silicone, or tissue grafts. These implants can help address a penis that appears too thin. As with any surgery, there are certain risks with this method of treatment. It is important to speak with a specialist beforehand to fully understand the implications of surgery.
