Vaginoplasty surgery addresses a vagina that has become loose or slack due to aging or childbirth. This vaginal reconstruction procedure is designed to tighten the vagina and reconnects separated vaginal muscles. It also involves the removal of extra mucosa skin from the back side of the vagina, as well as the removal of external skin to bolster the vagina’s appearance.
At Comprehensive Urology, our team is dedicated to helping patients get the best results possible. We are happy to explain how a vaginoplasty is performed, respond to patient concerns and questions, and offer treatment recommendations. By doing so, we help patients take the guesswork out of vaginoplasty.
Women commonly consider vaginoplasty after childbirth. At this point, vaginal laxity may occur that causes vaginal tissues to stretch and vaginal muscles to separate. Also, vaginal laxity sometimes leads to sexual dysfunction.
Candidates for vaginoplasty surgery may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
Key benefits of vaginoplasty include:
Vaginoplasty helps women improve vaginal tone and tightness, and many women feel more feminine and youthful following treatment.
Vaginoplasty helps women correct damage to the vaginal walls and alleviate vaginal pain and discomfort.
Vaginoplasty helps women tighten the vaginal canal; it often helps women dealing with sexual dysfunction and results in increased sensation during sex.
Vaginoplasty enables women to remove external skin from the vagina and improve the vagina’s overall appearance.
Vaginoplasty is a complex procedure, and as such, a consultation with a board-certified surgeon is necessary. This consultation is beneficial for all parties involved. For patients, the consultation enables them to learn about vaginoplasty and whether the procedure can help them accomplish their surgical goals. For surgeons, the consultation allows them to analyze a patient’s surgical goals, medical conditions, previous surgeries, and other medical information to determine whether vaginoplasty is the best-possible treatment option.
Typically, a surgeon will perform a medical evaluation during a patient consultation. If the surgeon determines a patient is a candidate for vaginoplasty, he or she then will discuss the surgery and possible outcomes. Or, a surgeon may recommend alternative treatments if he or she determines the risks of vaginoplasty outweigh the surgery’s benefits.
The surgeons at Comprehensive Urology want to help patients in any way they can. Our surgeons will learn about patients and review all aspects of a vaginoplasty procedure with them. This approach ensures patients receive extensive care before, during, and after a vaginoplasty procedure.
On average, a vaginoplasty procedure requires about 2 to 2.5 hours to complete. Swelling is common after surgery, and ice packs can be used to reduce swelling at this time.
Vaginoplasty recovery time is minimal. Patients should rest for one to two days after treatment, and most patients can return to work within about one week of surgery. However, patients should wait at least three weeks before they resume regular exercise and approximately six weeks before they engage in sex.
