Robotic Surgery for Bladder Cancer
|
Robot assisted radical cystectomy is performed by our surgeons utilizing the Da Vinci robot to enhance minimally invasive surgical techniques in a manner similar to which it is used for prostate cancer. The computer then translates the surgeons specific maneuvers to the surgical robot attached to laparoscopic ports placed into small keyhole incisions on the abdomen. This allows the surgeon complete control over the robot while performing the same open surgical maneuvers in a minimally invasive setting. At Comprehensive Urology, our surgeons have experience with robotic and open surgery for bladder cancer and have made numerous presentations on different aspects of the technique at national and international urologic meetings. Although the gold standard is still considered the “open” surgical approach, there are numerous advantages of robotic surgery compared to the traditional open approach. They include:
Smaller incisions
Less blood loss
Less pain
Faster recovery
Shorter hospital stay
Less scarring
Decreased risk of infection
