Treatments for Early Stage Bladder Cancer
|
When a bladder cancer is suspected on visualization of the bladder during cystoscopy, often the definitive diagnosis and treatment can be performed at the same time. When bladder cancer is found early (superficial, low grade, Stage Ta or 1), usually the tumor can be removed at the time of bladder biopsy using instruments through the urinary tract (termed transurethral resection- TUR).
Sometimes when there is more than one localized tumor, or when the tumor is higher grade or recurrent, the surgeon may give additional medications directly into the bladder through a catheter to help prevent the cancer from recurring or progressing.
